Richard Dean Morales participated in GeoSofia 2026 in Sofia, Bulgaria, where his research on shared-wall boundaries in CityGML models was presented. Hosted by the GATE Institute, the event brought together the 3D GeoInfo, Smart Data and Smart Cities, and LADM & 3D LA communities from September 28 to October 2, 2026.

The photograph brings together colleagues from TU Delft’s UrbäNRG Lab, where Richard is currently an external member. Embedded in TU Delft’s 3D Geoinformation group, the lab studies urban digital twins, energy simulation, and data modelling for the built environment.

A new publication in the ISPRS Archives

The paper, Automated geometric decomposition and semantic enrichment of shared wall boundary surfaces in LoD 2 CityGML models for urban building energy modelling, was published on September 29, 2026. It is co-authored by Richard Dean Morales, Camilo León-Sánchez, Giorgio Agugiaro, Amaryllis Audenaert, and Stijn Verbeke.

The study automates the identification and subdivision of shared walls in LoD 2 CityGML models for EnergyPlus simulation. Its Antwerp case study shows how accounting for heat exchange between neighbouring buildings affects heating demand and indoor temperature estimates.
